Senior Tax Reviewer & Team Lead

About Gundersons CFO & Bookkeeping

Gundersons CFO & Bookkeeping is a Texas-based accounting and bookkeeping firm serving small businesses and individual clients. We operate with documented processes, high standards, and an uncompromising commitment to accuracy. We are building a team that takes ownership of their work and thrives in a structured, professional environment where quality is the standard, not the goal.

The Opportunity

We are hiring a Senior Tax Reviewer & Team Lead to serve as the final checkpoint on every return that leaves our office. This is a full-time, in-person role at our Hempstead, TX office. Your primary responsibility is reviewing completed business and individual tax returns for accuracy, compliance, and quality before they go to the client. You will supervise the preparation team, enforce firm standards, and own the quality control process end-to-end. Business entities are the core of our tax practice: S-Corps, partnerships, and multi-entity structures make up the majority of your review load. You will also review individual returns, many of which connect directly to the business clients you oversee.

This role is for someone who has been in the preparer seat long enough to know exactly what to look for, and who is ready to lead a team rather than just work in one.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct final review and sign-off on all outgoing business returns (Form 1120-S, Form 1065, Schedule C) and individual returns (Form 1040) prior to client delivery
  • Identify errors, omissions, and missed planning opportunities in prepared returns and provide structured feedback to preparers
  • Supervise and mentor tax preparation staff during tax season and year-round
  • Enforce firm quality control checklists and review protocols consistently across the team
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex tax situations, multi-entity structures, and IRS correspondence
  • Coordinate with bookkeeping staff to ensure year-end workpapers and supporting schedules meet review-ready standards before returns enter the queue
  • Manage filing deadlines, extension workflow, and review queue prioritization across all active client files
  • Communicate directly with clients on complex issues, planning conversations, and return outcomes
  • Support resolution of IRS notices, CP notices, and audit inquiries
  • Identify process gaps and recommend improvements to firm workflows and review standards

Technical Requirements

  • 5+ years of tax preparation experience with demonstrated depth in small business returns
  • Strong working knowledge of Form 1120-S, Form 1065, Schedule C, and Form 1040 (all schedules)
  • Experience reviewing returns prepared by others, not just preparing them
  • Active, current PTIN required before start date
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software (Drake Tax, ProSeries, UltraTax, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of depreciation, fixed asset schedules, basis tracking, and estimated tax calculations
  • Familiarity with multi-entity structures and pass-through taxation
  • Experience with IRS e-filing procedures, extension workflow, and correspondence resolution
  • QuickBooks Online experience strongly preferred

Who You Are

We use the Predictive Index (PI) behavioral assessment as part of our hiring process. You have sharp technical instincts, you catch what others miss, and you hold standards without making people feel managed. You can read a return quickly, identify the risk, and communicate the issue clearly to a preparer who needs to learn and to a client who needs reassurance. You lead by example, not by authority. You are organized enough to manage a review queue under deadline pressure and experienced enough to know when something needs a second look versus when it is ready to go. You do not need to be told what good looks like. You already know.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrolled Agent (EA) designation strongly preferred
  • CPA license or active CPA candidate a plus
  • Experience in a multi-preparer firm environment
  • Background handling IRS correspondence, CP notices, and audit support
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Monday through Friday schedule (Saturday availability required during peak tax season; Fridays off post-season)
  • Leadership role with direct impact on team quality and firm reputation
  • Professional environment with clear systems, documented processes, and real accountability
